Sergio Larrain: Valparaiso de Sergio Larrain

Descripción - Críticas 'You can see the glory and the grime of [Valparaiso] in Larrain's images' - The Herald 'Gives further insight into a truly great photographer for whom making pictures was a form of spiritual quest' - EYE Magazine 'A fine publication' - Black & White Photography Reseña del editor The first publication in English of Sergio Larrain’s much-prized book, beautifully produced as a clothbound volumeSergio Larrain (1931–2012) published very few books during his lifetime, but perhaps the most fêted among them was Valparaíso. He photographed this Chilean seaport throughout his career, but it was in the early 1960s, when he returned to his homeland after travelling the world as a Magnum photographer, that it became a focus for his attention. He saw it as ‘a sordid yet romantic city’, standing between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, falling into a slow decline as its trading importance faded away, yet still retaining hints of beauty and magic. Now published in English for the first time, this new edition of Valparaíso is based on a layout designed by Larrain in 1993 in response to the original French edition of 1991. It features a text by Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda, specially written for Larrain, an essay by Agnès Sire, and a selection of previously unpublished photographs taken between 1952 and 1992, expanding the original 36 images to a total of 120. Handwritten notes and texts by Larrain himself accompany the photographs.Table of ContentsIntroduction by Pablo Neruda • The photographs Biografía del autor Sergio Larrain (1931-2012) was a Chilean born Magnum Photographer.

The very fact that vulvas feel so controversial to look at underlines the power of the project. * The Guardian * A revelation and celebration of everything being female means. -- Sarah Ditum I have watched toddlers, young children, teenagers and adults alike flick through all of the brilliant books of this series in my house.

The beach beneath me was full of activity with horses and carts backed into the sea. Men were standing in the sea next to the carts, using small wire nets attached to poles to fish out the coal from the water beneath them. The place confounded time; here the Middle Ages and the twentieth century intertwined.” Chris Killip began photographing the people of Lynemouth seacoal beach in the north east of England in 1982, after nearly seven years of failed efforts to obtain their consent. During 1983 to 1984 he lived in a caravan on the seacoal camp, and documented the life, work and the struggle to survive on the beach, using his unflinching
